The History Behind Tan Ky Ancient House

"Just a few steps away from the bustling Nguyen Thai Hoc pedestrian street, you’ll find yourself in a different world – where time seems to stand still and whispers tales of a once-prosperous port city."

Located at 101 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, right in the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town, Tan Ky is one of the best-preserved heritage houses in the area. Built in 1741 (late 18th century) by a Chinese merchant named Le Cong, the house was later named "Tan Ky" by his second-generation descendants. The name symbolizes "prosperity in business."

Having sheltered seven generations over more than two centuries, the house has witnessed numerous floods—especially the historic one in 1964 that submerged nearly the entire ground floor. Despite this, Tan Ky has retained its original architecture and traditional lifestyle, making it an exemplary model of a traditional Hoi An house. Notably, it has hosted many heads of state and renowned cultural researchers.

In 1990, Tan Ky was recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Cultural Heritage and also designated as a National Cultural and Historical Monument by the Vietnamese government.

A Harmonious Blend of Japanese - Chinese - Vietnamese Architecture

"Beyond its historical significance, Tan Ky is a vivid testament to cultural fusion – let’s explore the architectural elements that make it a symbol of the Ancient Town."

Tan Ky Ancient House is a perfect blend of traditional Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architectural styles. Covering 500 square meters, the house follows the typical “tube house” design with weathered yin-yang roof tiles. Its front opens onto the bustling Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, while the back faces the river—ideal for both land and water trade in the past. The structure features two stories and three compartments, designed with the five elements Metal - Wood - Water - Fire - Earth, reflecting a unique feng shui balance.

It is one of the few ancient houses that still retains its original layout and features, embodying the architectural spirit of historic Hoi An.

  • Valuable Wooden Structure: The entire house is constructed using rare hardwoods such as ironwood, jackfruit, assembled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joints—not a single iron nail is used—demonstrating the craftsmanship and affluence of its original owners.

  • Intricate Carvings: Inside, the beams and columns are elaborately carved with traditional motifs like the Four Seasons, animals, and floral patterns, exuding a sense of both antiquity and elegance.

  • Natural Ventilation and Light: One unique feature is the absence of windows. Instead, a skylight in the center of the house allows natural light and airflow, a distinctive element of Hoi An 's old architecture.

A Treasure Trove of Historical Artifacts

"Inside the house lies a hidden trove – where ancient artifacts reveal the lifestyle and philosophy of past generations."

Every piece of furniture and decor carries symbolic meaning: mother-of-pearl inlaid couplets, antique wooden beds and cabinets, ancestral altars—all reflecting the disciplined and dignified way of life of the past. Still preserved today are hundreds of priceless relics such as porcelain hookah bowls, tea sets, Chu Dau ceramic vases, and the famous Pipa vase, some dating back centuries.

One remarkable artifact is a Confucius bowl aged over 550–600 years, symbolizing the importance of moderation. When water is poured in too quickly or too full, it overflows—teaching the lesson of balance and restraint in life.

Additionally, ancient horizontal lacquered boards and parallel sentences in Han script, encouraging learning and virtue, further enriched the cultural and historical values of the house.

A “Living Heritage” Experience with the Host Family

"What makes Tan Ky truly special is the breath of life that still flows through its halls – come experience what it feels like to step inside a living heritage in the heart of Hoi An."

Unlike static museum spaces, Tan Ky is a living heritage site where life still goes on. The current generation of the family resides on the upper floor, while the ground floor is open for visitors. This balance between daily life and heritage preservation allows visitors not only to admire the architecture but also to feel the living traditions of Hoi An’s people passed down through generations.

Especially notable are antique items like the 150-year-old ancestral altar cabinet, ancient calligraphic boards, and Han-character couplets, all standing as vivid reminders of Hoi An’s golden age as a bustling port.
